American Conger Eel (Conger oceanicus)
American Conger Eel (Conger oceanicus)
American congers (Conger oceanicus) are a large and cryptic species of conger eel native to the northwestern Atlantic along the east coast of the United States. They are generally common in bays, inlets, and offshore structure and are often confused with American eels (Anguilla rostrata) by fishermen who catch them unintentionally. American congers are impressively large eels and can reach lengths of over 6ft and weigh up to 88lbs, however 3-4ft is more typical.
American congers, while common in the wild, are an insanely rare offering in the captive market and are a species I’ve wanted to bring to my customers for years. Their housing needs will be similar to those of large morays and tankmates should be selected carefully to avoid fish that will become prey. The eels I’m offering are already very well-established and will make for amazing captives for those with the means to provide for them.
Origin: Currently available fish are field-collected.
Care Level: Intermediate-advanced.

pH: 8.0-8.5
Water Temp: 60-75F.
Other Care Preferences: As with all eels, choose tankmates wisely and make sure your aquarium is escape proof.
