Arizona Vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus tohono)
Arizona Vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus tohono)
Arizona vinegaroons (Mastigoproctus tohono) are a large species of whipscorpion from the southwestern US. They reach similar sizes to the giant vinegaroons (Mastigoproctus giganteus) from Texas, but often have a more reddish tint. Arizona vinegaroons appreciate moderate humidity levels and several inches of substrate for burrowing. They are one of my favorite arachnids to keep and are suitable for all levels of invertebrate enthusiast.
Vinegaroons get their name from their interesting defense mechanism of releasing acetic acid when threatened. Acetic acid is the main component of vinegar and has a very strong vinegar smell when released. They aren't considered dangerous to people and their "vinegar" is only irritating if gotten into the eyes or mouth so proper care should be taken to wash your hands after working with them.
Currently available specimens are field-collected sub-adults/adults.
