Brown bullheads (Ameiurus nebulosus) are a medium-sized species of catfish with a widespread range throughout the eastern United States and ranging north into southeastern Canada. They have also been introduced to several areas on the west coast and in Canada outside of their native range. Also called “hornpout” and “mud cats”, these bottom feeders are known for being able to survive  in heavily polluted water and will tolerate dissolved oxygen levels as low as 0.2ppm.

Brown bullheads are very fun and personable catfish for large aquariums or ponds and do well with similarly sized fish that they won’t be able to swallow. They are adaptable to a wide variety of water parameters and typically do well as long as extremes are avoided.

Origin: Currently available specimens are hatchery bred and raised.

Please keep in mind that these fish were bred and raised in outdoor ponds and some may have minor cosmetic imperfections such as an imperfect fin or old scar.

Care Level: Beginner.

Diet: Omnivores although primarily carnivorous, feeding on various worms, crustaceans, insects, snails, and other fish. They will readily accept prepared foods/pellet foods.

Adult Size: They can reach up to 20” although 8”-12” is average.

pH: 6.5-7.8

Water Temp: 60-78F

Other Care Preferences: They will eat just about anything that can fit in their mouth so pick tankmates carefully. They are notorious for uprooting plants and moving decor around, keep this in mind when planning for their tank.
