Southern Black Widow (Latrodectus mactans)
Southern Black Widow (Latrodectus mactans)
Southern black widows (Latrodectus mactans) are native to the southeastern United States and are one of the most iconic and well-known arachnids of all time. Latrodectus mactans have a glossy jet black and an infamous bright red hourglass on the underside of their abdomen. Many even have bright red markings coming up onto the tops of their abdomens as well, which makes them one of our best looking native spiders in my opinion.
Currently available specimens are captive bred juveniles and field-collected sub-adult/adult females.
*Please be aware that this species possesses medically significant venom.*
