Couch's Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus couchii)
Couch's Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus couchii)
Couch's spadefoot toads (Scaphiopus couchii), often just called spadefoots since they aren't true toads, are a unique-looking amphibian endemic to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Couch's spadefoots inhabit areas with sandy, well-drained soils often populated with creasote bush and mesquite trees as well as prairies and grasslands. Named for the dark sickle-shaped "spade" at the base of each hind foot, this allows them to bury themselves quickly in loose soil. Spadefoots are a burrowing species and will spend much of their time underground both in the wild and in captivity.
Spadefoot toads aren't well-suited to the novice amphibian keeper as they can stress easily, making them better suited to hobbyists with a bit of experience. They will spend the vast majority of their time buried, usually only active at night when the lights are out.
Currently available animals are field-collected animals.
