Crevalle Jack (Caranx hippos)

Crevalle jack (Caranx hippos), also called jack crevalle, are a large and widely distributed species of marine fish that ranges across parts of both the eastern and western Atlantic Ocean. They are popular as a sportfish and as a foodfish. Crevalle jack are one of the largest species in their genus and can be found in both inshore and offshore habitats. Juveniles commonly school in estuaries and can be found in very low-salinity waters, although they will move to higher-salinity water as they grow.

Jack crevalle are impressive display fish in captivity but they are large and highly active. Their space requirements make them suitable for only the largest of private aquaria or ideally public aquaria and large-scale aquaculture projects. 

Origin: Currently available fish are field-collected. 

Care Level: Intermediate-advanced. 

Salinity (SG): 1.004-1.026. Higher salinities are best for larger specimens. 

Diet: Carnivorous. They will take a variety of live and frozen foods as well as pellets.

Adult Size: Maximum recorded length is just over 49”, however lengths in the 20” range are average. 

pH: 8.0-8.5

Water Temp: 70-80F.

Other Care Preferences: These large and highly active fish are best suited to public aquaria or large-scale aquaculture projects.
