Forbes’ sea stars (Asterias forbesi) are an attractive species of starfish that lives in coastal waters from the Gulf of Maine south to the Gulf of Mexico. They are most common in shallow, rocky habitat as well as on dock pilings and in shellfish beds.
Forbes’ sea stars aren’t often available in the trade but can be an awesome addition to the appropriate temperate or coldwater aquarium. It is important to keep in mind when housing these starfish that they can reach up to 6” in diameter and will consume most shellfish and gastropods that they are housed with.
Origin: Currently available animals are field-collected.
Care Level: Intermediate-advanced.
Salinity (SG): 1.021-1.026.
Diet: Various shellfish and gastropods.
Adult Size: Doesn’t typically exceed 6” in diameter.
pH: 8.0+
Water Temp: 55-75F.
