Long-clawed Hermit Crab (Pagurus longicarpus)

 Long-clawed hermit crabs (Pagurus longicarpus), also referred to as long-wristed hermit crabs, are a small, fully-aquatic species of hermit crab that is abundant throughout coastal environments from Nova Scotia south through the Gulf of Mexico. These hermit crabs are common in tide pools and the shallow water areas of bays, estuaries, and beaches. 

Long-clawed hermit crabs are not particularly common in aquaria, but can make a fantastic addition to a wide-variety of brackish and marine aquariums. They are extremely hardy and very tolerant of salinity and temperature fluctuations. Their adaptability makes them suitable for coldwater, temperate, and sub-tropical marine and high-end brackish aquariums. Like other aquatic hermit crabs they make for an amazing addition to a clean-up crew (CUC) due to them being very active scavengers. Their high levels of activity also make them equally endearing and enjoyable to watch throughout the day. 

Origin: Field-collected. 

Care Level: Beginner. 

Salinity (SG): 1.015-1.026

Diet: Scavengers feeding on almost any organic matter. Great addition to any CUC. Good to supplement with a high-protein pellet and/or frozen foods. 

Adult Size: 1/2”-1” 

pH: 7.5-8.5

Water Temp: 60-80F. Under 78F is ideal.
