Marble Achara Catfish (Leiarius marmoratus)

The marble achara catfish (Leiarius marmoratus) is a gentle giant native to the Amazon River basin throughout Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia as well as the Orinoco and Essequibo basins. These catfish are popular amongst monster fish enthusiasts as they are known to be fairly peaceful, making them compatible with a variety of other similarly sized fish. 

Marble acharas are beautiful and impressive catfish, however they grow very large and are not suitable for small aquariums. They will benefit from having a few hiding spots in addition to having a large open area to cruise around in. While they are know to be peaceful with similarly-sized or larger fish, they will eat smaller fish. 

Currently available animals are field-collected imports that have been through a preventative quarantine and treatments as necessary. 

Care Level: Intermediate-advanced.

Diet: Primarily carnivorous but not picky, should be given a varied diet in captivity. 

Adult Size: 24”-28” is typical, however they can exceed 30”.

pH: 6.0-7.4

Water Temp: 70F-78F

Other Care Preferences: Will need a very large aquarium. They like to have some areas of cover and open space to swim. Clean water with stable parameters is important.
