Messor’s Shore Crab (Metopograpsus messor)
Messor’s Shore Crab (Metopograpsus messor)
Messor’s shore crabs (Metopograpsus messor) are a pretty species of grapsid crab with a widespread distribution from East Africa to Fiji. They are most common among mangroves and rocky shores of intertidal zones. This species is mostly herbivorous but should still be provided with a varied diet that contains some animal matter. Messor’s shore crabs are almost non-existent in the US hobby, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to work with these beautiful crabs!
Messor’s shore crabs are seldom offered in captivity and thus there is little in the way of comprehensive care information available. Brackish water is likely necessary for long-term success, I’m currently caring for them following similar guidelines to those for red claw crabs (Perisesarma bidens).
Currently available specimens are field-collected sub-adults and adults. Some may be missing a leg which is purely cosmetic.
