Oyster Toadfish (Opsanus tau)

Oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) are an infamous species of fish native to the east coast from Maine to Florida. These fish inhabit a wide range of salinities and are most commonly associated with oyster beds, however they can be found almost anywhere with hard structure. 

They are generally despised by many recreational fishermen for their tendency to be “bait thieves” and the difficulty they present when trying to be unhooked. Despite their reputation amongst fishermen they are an extremely personable aquarium resident. Oyster toadfish are a hardy fish that is full of personality and can thrive in a variety of water parameters making them suitable for both temperate and sub-tropical, brackish and marine aquariums.

Currently available animals are field-collected and have gone through a preventative quarantine and treatments as necessary. 

Care Level: Beginner-intermediate.

Salinity (SG): 1.010-full marine.

Diet: Primarily carnivorous. Not picky in aquarium. 

Adult Size: 17” is possible however they rarely exceed 15”. 

pH: 7.5-8.5

Water Temps: 60-75F

Other Care Preferences: Care should be taken when choosing tank mates as this species will not hesitate to engulf anything that can fit in their mouthes.
