Peninsula Newt (Notophthalmus v. piaropicola)
Peninsula Newt (Notophthalmus v. piaropicola)
Peninsula newts (Notophthalmus v. piaropicola) are small species of newt that can only be found in peninsular Florida. Individuals can range from dark green to almost black and are covered in black speckles. These newts are almost entirely aquatic and neoteny is fairly common, however they should still be given access to small land areas in captivity. Peninsula newts primarily feed on aquatic invertebrates in the wild and should be provided with a varied diet in captivity.
I like to add Indian almond/catappa leaves to their aquarium to make the water slightly tannic and I also keep them with live plants such as java moss, hornwort, jungle val, Salvinia, and duckweed. It is important to keep these newts at cooler temperatures, under 70F being ideal.
Currently available animals are long-term captive adults.
