Six-spotted Fishing Spider (Dolomedes triton)
Six-spotted Fishing Spider (Dolomedes triton)
Six-spotted fishing spiders (Dolomedes triton) are a pretty species of fishing spider with a widespread range throughout North America, particularly the eastern half. They are semi-aquatic and can be found along the shore and on emergent vegetation of wetland habitats. The females can exceed 3” while the males stay smaller and rarely exceed 1.5”. Dolomedes triton mostly feed on invertebrates but will eat just about anything they can catch including small amphibians and fish.
These are the “true fishers” of the fishing spiders as they can catch and eat fish several times their body size. Their species name comes from the Greek god, Triton, who was the son of Poseidon and messenger of the big sea. Six-spotted fishing spiders were one of the first spiders I ever kept and continue to be one of, if not, my personal favorite arachnids.
Currently available specimens are field-collected juveniles-adults.
