European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas)

European green crabs (Carcinus maenas) are an infamous species of littoral crab native to the northeastern Atlantic and Baltic Sea. This species has established multiple invasive populations across the globe and is particularly well-known on the east coast of the US. Green crabs have been known to compete with native species of crab for resources, damage eelgrass and estuary habitat, and damage shellfish populations. They are popular as bait for tautog fishing and are occasionally harvested for food. 

This species is not often kept in aquaria, however they are quite hardy and adaptable to wide range of salinities and temperatures. They can be kept in brackish or marine water and will do best in coldwater or temperate set-ups. Green Crabs are omnivores and will eat just about anything.
