Florida Bark Scorpion (Centruroides gracilis)
Florida Bark Scorpion (Centruroides gracilis)
Florida bark scorpions (Centruroides gracilis) are an impressive and beautifully cryptic species of bark scorpion that ranges across Florida, the Caribbean, and Central America. The Florida populations were unintentionally introduced from Cuba. They are the largest Centruroides species in the US and can reach up to 4”, with the males having a longer tail than the females. Interestingly, the populations from the Caribbean and Central America are reported to have a more potent venom than the populations in the United States.
Florida bark scorpions are very popular amongst scorpion enthusiasts due to their impressive size and cryptic appearance as well their ability to be kept communally. Also referred to as Caribbean dusky scorpions, slender brown scorpions, and blue scorpions, their coloration can vary between populations with various hues of brown, red, and yellow. Florida bark scorps are naturally a semi-arboreal species of scorpion and do live communally in the wild. These scorpions are typically regarded as having an “intermediate” level of venom by hobbyists, but effects can vary widely and this species should be treated with respect regardless.
Origin: Currently available animals are field-collected sub-adults and adults.
*Please be aware that this species possesses medically significant venom.*
