Indian mud morays (Gymnothorax tile) are an attractive species of moray eel native to the western Pacific and Indian Oceans. They commonly inhabit bays and estuaries, and even lower portions of rivers. They are commonly found in soft-bottomed areas of sand or mud, making sand an ideal substrate in captivity. Mud morays are highly piscivorous and primarily feed on fish and crustaceans in the wild.
Often sold as “freshwater snowflake morays”, they aren’t actually a freshwater species and do not do well when kept in pure freshwater for extended periods. They will often refuse to feed in freshwater and will develop a number of health issues. Juveniles especially are known to enter freshwater on occasion which is likely where this monicker comes from. Well-filtered, highly oxygenated water is necessary for captive success and water changes should be regular. Be sure to provide multiple hiding spots for these eels to feel secure and prevent them from becoming stressed. Mud morays are great option for those interested in keeping moray eels but can’t accommodate a large saltwater aquarium for marine species. These eels are very hardy when kept in brackish or marine conditions and make for very interesting and manageable captives.
Most dealers keep this species in their freshwater systems before sale which isn’t ideal for the fish and can lead to more difficulties when trying to establish them in your aquarium. We keep ours in brackish water (1.005-1.007 SG) and make sure they have fed multiple times before shipping to ensure they are healthy and ready to go by the time they reach your aquarium.
Currently available animals are field-collected imports that have been preventatively quarantined and treated as necessary.
Care Level: Intermediate.
Salinity (SG): 1.005-full marine. Adults ideally kept between 1.010-full marine.
Diet: Carnivores that should be given a varied diet in captivity. Live and frozen foods will be accepted.
Adult Size: Up to 24”
pH: 7.5-8.5
Water Temp: 76-82F
Other Care Preferences: Tight fitting lid is a must as eels can be escape artists. They are highly aggressive and tankmates should be chosen carefully. They do well with other morays when given enough space.
